We've heard of Haggerty's fans, but… At the opening reception in the Allinson Gallery
Dennis Haggerty’s retrospective drew hundreds of visitors. It also captured the attention of the Philadelphia Inquirer, where longtime art reviewer Victoria Donohoe, described the exhibit as a “handsome show.”
In her September 23rd review, Donohoe uncharacteristically focused on Haggerty’s drawing ability rather than his painting style, tracing what she called his “personal synthesis” of the two in the 70-piece exhibit. The most “painterly” pieces, she said, often depict “blazing dawn” or dusk ruddy sky color. ” But they too are conceived almost as drawings in that they depict abstract forms which have a “surface flatness” that “enliven the linear value of the forms.”
The review concludes with a summary of a career spent developing a “personal synthesis of drawing and painting.” “Boldly trafficking in the once strictly defined terrain where painting was painting and drawing was drawing, and the two hardly ever met, much less joined, Haggerty now smartly combines the two, seamlessly and with ardor.”
