This workshop will be based on painting methods that were used in the 17th & 18th centuries to paint a portrait from life. The methods involve four distinct and separate layers of paint known as Discovery, Dead Color, Working Up, and Retouch. Some other areas of concentration will be Toned Grounds, The Golden Section, and the study of Values. Student/Artists will be shown methods used to measure and place the human head in a fashion that will produce a balanced and reasonable likeness of the live model available to the class. The objective of the workshop will be to complete a painting in the most direct, simple and economic way, while learning a clear understanding of the colors on the portrait pallet and the process to achieving outstanding results. Materials list is available in the office.
